MOFFIE – A FILM BY OLIVER HERMANUS
“Moffie” tells the story of a young conscript in Apartheid South Africa. Tasked with surviving his military service, his journey becomes increasingly challenging when a profound connection is ignited between him and a fellow recruit. Against the backdrop of a society entrenched in prejudice, “Moffie” delves into the complexities of identity and explores the struggles faced by individuals who defy societal norms. The film confronts the derogatory term “Moffie,” which serves as a potent Afrikaans slur aimed at homosexual individuals.
We have had the privilege of collaborating with the exceptionally talented composer, Braam du Toit, for a significant period of time. Our shared vision for this project aimed to not only challenge the musicians involved but also embrace the inherent tension within the intricate film narrative. Braam’s remarkable ability to layer compositions allowed him to weave a complex and intricate theme for the film, despite the limitations of a small ensemble. His musical genius shines through, elevating the overall experience and adding depth to the film’s compelling story.
BRAAM DU TOIT
At the heart of our musical pursuit lies an unwavering commitment to push the boundaries and delve into uncharted realms. We embarked on an extensive search across the country in pursuit of an acoustic haven that would transcend the confines of a traditional recording studio. Our goal was to extract the musicians from familiar constructs, immersing them in the very essence of the story we sought to convey. By embracing a space that transcended the conventional, we aimed to create an environment where the musicians could fully immerse themselves and give life to the narrative with unparalleled authenticity.
With meticulous attention to detail, we established a state-of-the-art mobile film recording studio within the sacred confines of the chapel. This ingenious setup seamlessly merged the sophistication of a high-end recording studio with the serenity and sanctity of the space. By transcending the limitations of traditional recording environments, we ensured an uninterrupted creative flow, free from the constraints of time and distractions. This enabled us to capture every nuance and evoke the purest essence of the artistic endeavor, delivering an unparalleled level of craftsmanship and sonic excellence.
